Mid-late Holocene El Nino variability in the equatorial Pacific from coral microatolls

چکیده
Oxygen isotope ratios in Porites microatolls from Christmas Island in the central Pacific provide highresolution proxy records of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) variability since 3.8 thousand years ago (ka). Compared with modern microatolls, reconstructions from fossil microatolls imply that interannual variations in ENSO sea-surface temperature and precipitation were less intense 3.8–2.8 ka, but more pronounced at 1.7 ka. Amplification of ENSO at ∼2 ka is consistent with precessional changes in insolation seasonality, but exceeds model predictions and may reflect stronger rainfall teleconnections through enhanced interaction between the Southern Oscillation and the Pacific Intertropical Convergence Zone.

El Nifio Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and decadal-scale climate variability at 10øN in the eastern Pacific from 1893 to 1994: A coral-based reconstruction from Clipperton Atoll
We have developed a 101 year (1893-1994) subseasonal oxygen (•80) and carbon (•3C) isotopic time series from Clipperton Atoll in the eastern Pacific using the coral Porites lobata. In agreement with Linsley et al. [1999] we find that seasonal nd interannual coral •80 variability at Clipperton results from variability in both water temperature and salinity. Three new coral time series demonstrat...

El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a major source of global interannual variability, but its response to climate change is uncertain. Paleoclimate records from the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) provide insight into ENSO behavior when global boundary conditions (ice sheet extent, atmospheric partial pressure of CO2) were different from those today. In this work, we reconstruct LGM temperature v...
متن کاملCoupled model simulations of mid-Holocene ENSO and comparisons with coral oxygen isotope records
The sensitivity of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) to changes in mean climate is investigated for simulations of pre-industrial and mid-Holocene (6000 years before present) climate using the Hadley Centre coupled atmosphere-ocean model, HadCM3. Orbitally-forced changes in insolation in the mid-Holocene produce changes in seasonality which may alter ENSO amplitude and frequency. The model si...
متن کاملKeep up or drown: adjustment of western Pacific coral reefs to sea-level rise in the 21st century
Since the Mid-Holocene, some 5000 years ago, coral reefs in the Pacific Ocean have been vertically constrained by sea level. Contemporary sea-level rise is releasing these constraints, providing accommodation space for vertical reef expansion. Here, we show that Porites microatolls, from reef-flat environments in Palau (western Pacific Ocean), are 'keeping up' with contemporary sea-level rise. ...
